Ride for Sight

DIS-CHEM Ride for Sight will be held at Boksburg City Stadium on February 12.

27 January 2012 | Annette van Schalkwyk

The route passes though Alberton on the R103 and the R61 Vereeniging Road. Motorists are requested to avoid these roads from early in the morning until noon. The organisers apologise for any inconvenience and would like to remind motorists to allow extra travelling time to avoid frustration.

It is the 24th year of the event taking place and raises some R3m for research into fighting retinal blindness.

Alberton Amateur Radio Club are a key component in the excellent safety record of the event. They are responsible for the radio communications and a sophisticated medical vehicle tracking system allows for prompt response at any accident. The medical team of Gauteng Province, Ekurhuleni Emergency services and Red Cross ensures excellent medical care is given to the 5 000 cyclists who are expected to participate.

The 116km Dis-Chem Super Classic has been chosen as a seeding event for the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge 2012 and the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour 2013. For the novice cyclist the Vita-thion 62km Challenge offers all the thrills of the event with far less sweat and tears. Pre-entries cost R190 for the 116km and R110 for the 62km.

Some of the reasons for the continued popularity of the event are the safety and security record, the scenic route, the cause behind the event and the fact that the entire organising committee are volunteers, many of them partially sighted. The organising committee are all members of Retina South Africa, Springs Wheelers and the Alberton Amateur Radio Club.

All the proceeds from the event go directly to the Cure in Sight project to bring clinical trials to fight retinal blindness to South Africa. Local Rotary and Lions Clubs will man the marshal flags. The City of Ekurhuleni will once again host the event and this ensures top class traffic management, road quality and safety of the participants. Free vision screening will also be offered at registration and on race day.

A total purse of R82 000 spread over the main categories makes this event one of the most lucrative in Gauteng. The casual riders have not been overlooked – more than R100 000 draw prizes are up for grabs. These include Mountain Bikes, a bike trailer, holidays, watches, bike tyres, helmets, etc.

Those who miss the pre-entry closing date will still be able to enter at registration at Cyclelab - Centurion and Fourways - and Tour de Frans, Boksburg prior to the event, but without goodie bags. Enter at www.cyclelab.com.
